Side by Side

Rescue Story: We lost our beloved pittie, Maci Mae (thus Audrey’s middle name; her first name is Tim’s mother’s name) to a brutal battle with cancer in March 2018. A very important part of our family, a large hole was created with her loss. We were in the process of selling our house and building a new one so decided to wait to add another doggy. In January of 2019 my daughter forwarded to me a video that was posted by Victoria Hopkins at Royal Animal Refuge about “long-timer” at the refuge named “Esther”. Surrendered to the shelter in May of 2017 with three litter mates, suffering from mange and emaciated, she was the only one left of her litter that had not been adopted. She was so beautiful and sweet and looked a lot like our sweet Maci. I told my daughter there was no way she would not be adopted by someone and since we were living in a small apartment temporarily we couldn’t do anything right then. Well, in March of 2019 Victoria posted another video of Esther when she was surrendered, a photo of this poor girl still at the shelter and a video of her. My heart broke for her. I showed it to my husband (we were still in our apartment for one more month before our house was completed) and he said, “call them and see if they will hold her for us”. I went and met Esther that weekend and to our excitement they told us they would hold her until we moved in our house. We moved in on April 22, 2019 and April 23, 2019 we drove to Royal Animal Refuge to finalize her adoption and bring her home. Audrey fit in from the moment she arrived. Her big brother Weezy greeted her with a smile, happy to have a little sister to look over. They have been best buddies ever since.

Esther, now Audrey Mae heading to her forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We have a lake on our property and both Weezy and Audrey love to go down to the lake and swim. Audrey had never seen or swam in a lake before, scared at first, a gentle tap in to the water by Tim and her desire to be like her big brother, she got in the water. Once she stepped in there was no turning back. All we have to do now is say “do you want to go to the lake” and she goes crazy with excitement and ready to swim.

What is life like since you rescued Audrey? Fortunately for Audrey she was in a wonderful rescue, Royal Animal Refuge, however, shelter life is very stressful and her ability to relax at first was very difficult. She has no problems with that now. (She has three different doggie beds to nap on and she uses all of them, preferrably while snuggling with Weezy.) For Tim and I, there is never a dull moment in our house, her silly antics and energy keep us laughing.

Photographers Note: I met up with Mary, Tim & the pups at a historical park called Coopers Furnace. Such a great spot & it was a finally a pretty day which have been few and far between over the last couple months of Georgia. Audrey is still a young and energetic girl, so there was a lot to see & smell, plus plenty of excitement just being out on an adventure with her whole family. Even with all that, she did really well. Such a beautiful girl, with those amazing light green eyes. Her brother Weezy was not featured because he is technically not a rescue but was so happy this handsome hunk was able to come along for the family shot. He was pretty happy about it too!
