What makes Stibb & Kilo unique? Stibb is completely obsessed with the ocean. She will run back and forth chasing the waves and swimming through them for hours and hours. When she gets to the beach there is no stopping her.. she runs directly to the water and doesn’t stop until she is picked up and carried away.
Kilo is literally the happiest dog that ever lived. He always has a huge smile on his face. His tail wags non-stop. Kilo’s energy is contagious. Just by looking at him, you can feel happiness radiating out of him and you can’t help but absorb and put out that same energy when you’re around him. It is impossible to not laugh and smile when you are around Kilo.
Stibb;s may not be running towards the water, but running around just the same!
Happy Kilo coming at ya!
Rescue Stories: Stibb is a rescue from the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, Stibb’s previous owners had her chained outside of their house as a “guard dog”. She lived day in, and day out chained to a tree. At some point, her chain ended up getting wrapped around her back leg. It must have been stuck around her leg for days because she ended up trying to chew her foot off to get out of it. Her owners took her to the vet and when the vet told them she needed to have her leg amputated, they decided they didn’t want her anymore. The vet ended up doing the surgery for free and once she recovered, brought her to the Humane Society where I was a volunteer. I happened to be volunteering the day she came in and I fell head over heels in love with her. I was not able to have pets at the apartment I lived in at the time, or else I would have taken her home that day. She stayed in the shelter for four months, deteriorating and really lost her spirit. She developed a skin fungus, refused to walk, and lost a ton of weight. I couldn’t bare to see her in that state any longer so I decided to break my lease and move so that I could adopt her. The rest is history!
Sweet Stibb settling in.
Kilo is also a rescue from the Virgin Islands. He and his litter mates were dropped off at the Humane Society, covered in fleas and emaciated. One day when I was at the shelter volunteering, I saw him cowered in the corner of a cage. He was petrified and flinched when I tried to pet him. When I went back next day, he was still hunched in a ball in the corner of the cage but he seemed to remember me and did the tiniest little wag of his tail. The shelter staff was worried about him and didn’t know how to bring him out of his shell. I decided to bring my dog Stibb for a play date to see if I could help. As soon as they saw each other, Kilo let his guard down and became the happy, hyper, wild thing that he is today. They were automatic best friends. I brought Kilo home right then and there, and from that day on, they have never left each other’s sides.
Puppy Kilo ready to start his new life!
What is your favorite pastime as a family? Watching Stibb play and swim at the beach is the most amazing thing. Even with three legs, there is nothing that can stop her when she is in her element. Her face is full of pure happiness, without a worry in the world. It has made me realize that losing a leg was truly a blessing in disguise. If she had never had to get her leg amputated, she would have lived her entire life chained to a tree never knowing the simple things, like running through the sand and waves, and the pure joy that she (and all dogs) deserves to experience.
One of Kilo’s favorite things is going for car rides. He has to be in the passenger’s side, and he demands that I pet his head the entire time. If I take my hand off of him, even for a second, he nudges me to get it back on there. He gets super relaxed, his eyes start to close, and you can tell he is so peaceful and happy.
What is life like since you rescued Stibb & Kilo? Life with Stibb never has a dull moment. She is always making me laugh and smile. She is a constant reminder that no matter what obstacles you face in life, you can overcome them and thrive.
Life with Kilo brings me so much happiness. His energy and aura are so powerful. Just being in his presence lifts my mood and looking at him puts a smile on my face. He is such a big goofball and he makes me laugh out loud at least a once a day.
Photographers Note: These two are just so cute together. You see the bond that was immediately formed when they met. They are the picture of living in the now and resilience. They don’t let their past dictate where they are today. I think the fact that these two were rescued from the Virgin Islands while Chelsea happen to be living there kind of makes you think these three were meant to be together. When you hear the details of their stories, even more so. Their big pittie smiles pretty much tell the story of their happy ever after!
