Rescue Story: Before Jennifer adopted Lou, Lou had a different life with a different owner. (So Jennifer was told by the rescue) Lou was taken from her previous owner due to abuse/neglect. Lou was taken in by a rescue called Guardians of the Green Mile located in Northwest Indiana. The rescued learned that Lou was pregnant and so did the previous owner. The previous owner wanted her back. However, Lou had complications and lost all but 1 pup in the litter. Also due to complications and having a C-section, the rescue went ahead and spayed her. Upon learning this information the previous owner no longer wanted Lou back since he could no longer continue to breed her. While the rescue was waiting for Lou to heal from pregnancy, a different rescue in Michigan contacted Guardians of the Green Mile because they had a litter of pups, with no mother to nurse them. Those pups were brought down and Lou nursed those pups until they were adopted out. Lou spent some time with a foster mom before Jennifer took Lou home.
In April 2017, Jennifer adopted Lou while in law school in NW Indiana. Lou and Jennifer immediately bonded. In the first weekend Lou learned how to play fetch and has not put a ball down since. Jennifer & Lou moved to Decatur in 2018. Jennifer started dating Zach in 2020 & got married in June 2021. Lou has bonded with Zach as well. Lou prefers his lap over Jennifer’s now. Lou went with Zach & Jennifer on a hike where Zach proposed to Jennifer. Lou was so over joyed she spilled the wine.
Official forever home announcement!!!
What is your favorite pastime as a family? Lou loves playing fetch, sunbathing, car rides to see Zach & going for walks/hikes. Lou did not enjoy the one time Jennifer & Zach took her kayaking because could not pick who she wanted to be with & kept jumping between the kayaks. Lou does not enjoy the beach (taking after her owners)
What is life like since you rescued Lou? Jennifer was in law school when adopting Lou, which may not have seemed like a good idea at the time but it has been an amazing journey. With Lou by Jennifer’s side, it gave her a routine back and helped with her sanity during law school. Lou made sure she had a regular food and sleep schedule. It was an easy adjustment. Lou helped Jennifer study for the bar exam and continues to be a good supporter while she is doing court via zoom.
Zach was not a dog person and had to warm up to Lou, which was pretty easy for Lou. Lou didn’t give him a choice and now Zach can’t imagine life without her. He spoils her just as much as Jennifer. Zach calls frequently to talk to Lou when he is away. Lou always perks her ear up and grabs her ball. Lou can now identify the sound of the truck when he pulls up to the house. Lou waits for him to come home while he is away.
Lou has not yet met a person she didn’t like. However, she is a little protective around new people. Once she brings you her ball, you are best friends. We are working on socializing her still. Lou loves people food, like apples & bananas but also enjoys a good donut & peanut butter ice cream treats. Lou loves bedtime cuddles where she can be the little spoon with as much skin to skin contact as possible (personal space is not a thing). Jennifer maintains contact with the former foster mom & rescue to let them know how she is doing.

Photographers Note: Johnny Cash had “ A Boy named Sue” and now we have “A Girl Named Lou”. Sounds like a hit song to me. What a story this girl has and boy did she hit the jackpot with her forever home. Knowing where she came from and how she is living now, just makes your heart smile. When I met up with this family at one of the many lovely parks in and around the Atlanta area, Hahn Woods. I heard Lou before I saw her. She is a vocal girl but what a personality she has. She really was all about her red kong ball and once she got use to me pointing a camera in her face, she was pretty good with my presence too. When Jennifer & Zach told me the engagement story with Lou dumping over the wine. I had to laugh. I am sure at the time Zach may not have been thrilled she ruined their special moment, but Lou sure did make it so they will never forget her role in that wonderful day & solidified a family of three! A little side note here, I was more then a little surprised as I was publishing this story that Zach didn’t start out as a dog person…..ummm What? This girl has him wrapped around her paw now….nice work Lou another pittie convert in the books!
