Stella - 11/21/21

Name/Age: Stella - 1.5 y/o

Family Members: Despite her best efforts, she’s an only child! Just mom and dad – Brooke and Andrew

How long has Stella been in the family? 1.5 years

Professions: Director of Implementation and Mining Engineer

Location: Decatur, GA

Nicknames: Stell, Weirdo, Pretty Girl, Stella Girl, Scardy Cat

5 words/phrases that best describe Stella?

  1. Goofy

  2. Loving

  3. Clingy

  4. Cuddly

  5. Playful

What makes Stella unique? We’re fairly certain Stella knows the exact day of the week and time better than us. She wakes us up if we sleep 5 minutes past our alarm, stares at the door when she knows her dad should be home and knows when it’s time for her afternoon playdate with her neighbor BFF! If we’re late for anything, she will make sure we’re aware by nudging us repeatedly with her nose.

Ball Life!

Rescue Story: Our friends were fostering her after she was given up by her first home. She was a 3 month old skinny girl full of fleas. They nursed her back to health and fostered her for a few weeks. Over those weeks, we fell in love with her. We decided to foster her after our friends had to go back into work. We both knew within the first 24 hours she’s never leaving!

Working the puppy eyes for that forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love hiking with Stella! No matter the distance or terrain, she is the first one in line and leading us. She’ll collect big sticks along the trail and jump into any creek or lake. She’ll then come home and sleep on the couch for 24 hours!

What is life like since you rescued Stella? When we first got Stella, she was very timid. She was scared of her own shadow. However, with time, obedience training and a lot of love, she’s starting to get braver every day. We truly enjoy every second with her. Our text chain is pretty much just different pictures of her in weird, goofy spots she decides to nap in. We’re thankful Stella found us!

Photographers Note: Stella wasn’t so sure what this whole thing was about when I arrived. First her parents “dress her up” with a bowtie (which was used because it smelled like other dogs) and then this strange woman was pointing this weird thing with what looked like a long nose at her. However, after a few tosses of the ball, she really hit her stride and would start to come right up to my lens and me to say Hello. This beautiful girl is quite photogenic and you would never guess by looking at her but her ears apparently have a mind of their own on occasion. Outside of the brief lack of cooperation at the beginning of the shoot (which was hilarious), I could have sat there all day taking photos of this beauty, her coat just gleamed in the sunshine and the look of joy on her face while she chased sticks and her ball was the definition of a forever home.

Hello there!

  1. Motherly

  2. Compassionate

What makes Georgia unique? Georgia has acted as a "mother" to many foster pups over the last two years. She even let's them try to nurse on her.

Rollin’ in the leaves!

Rescue Story: Georgia was rescued from a horrible dog hording situation. She had a rough first 5 years of life and has some scarring from being involved in dog fights. I went to our local Animal Shelter to rescue a dog. I went in with my kids and all of us were initially looking at the young small dogs. My son has Autism and wasn't fond of our meet and greets with the jumpy energetic pups and wasn't a fan of their barking. After meeting multiple dogs that didn't mesh well with our family I asked one of the workers if they had any calm couch potatoes needing a home. She asked if we were open to adopting a Pit Bull. I won't lie we were pretty nervous as you only hear such awful stories. But I trusted her and felt it couldn't hurt to meet one. She brought out Georgia a 5 year old Brindle Pit Mix. Georgia immediately went over to my kids calmly and rolled over for belly rubs. After that she came over to me and gave me kisses. I was sold this was meant to be our dog. The only problem was because of her past she was deemed "not adoptable" by the shelter. We sat there for what seemed like two hours to speak to the right people and make this rescue happen. Thankfully, after meeting our family and knowing she was going to be the only dog in the home they agreed. After a year & a half and seeing how amazing and sweet our baby was we added another dog to our family. A rescue Shih tzu and these two are the best of friends. We've also fostered several puppies and Georgia is the best mom to them all.

Georgia heading home!!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Georgia's preference is curling up on the couch and watching Lady and the Tramp

What is life like since you rescued Georgia? She's always happy. You can tell she knows how good life is and she spoils us all with smiles and kisses. She has certainly made our family feel complete.

Social Media: Instagram @poshpittieandwalle (although not very active)

Photographers Note: Imagine my surprise when this sweet girl gets out of her family’s car in a hat and scarf set complete with a lovely pearl collar. She was ready to get her picture taken! Georgia was such a good girl until she decided she was done and started trotting down the path towards home. (we met in a wooded park area behind their house). She knew exactly how to get there and was heading for the couch! I love how much this girl transformed in her loving home. Going from needing to be an only dog, to then stepping up as sister & BFF to WallE, all the way to being a foster mama to so many foster pups; including Omni one of our past volunteers. Makes me so happy to see a pup go from a horrible situation to one where they are loved and a cherished member of the family.

Beau - 11/13/21

Name/Age: Beau - 1.5 y/o

Family Members: Tessa (mom), Roxy (cat sister) & Velma (cat sister)

How long has Beau been in the family? 11 months

Profession: Hair Colorist

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: BoBo, Cute Bastard, Son

5 words/phrases that best describe Beau?

  1. Happy

  2. Adventurous

  3. Napper

  4. Playful

  5. Spoiled

What makes Beau unique? He is calm & brave, loves to kayak and hike.

Pretty happy lounging on a blanket with his bully stick.

Rescue Story: Beau was transferred to Atlanta from Alabama, rescued from Best Friends Animal Society. He was initially released for being “too much” like a pit bull.

Let’s go home Mom!!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Hiking & swimming in the river.

What is life like since you rescued Beau? It has made Mom the happiest she has ever been. She has the best hiking & kayaking companion. Beau loves playing with his new friends, being loved on & getting all the treats.

Social Media: Instagram: @beauthegeorgiadog

Photographers Note: What can I say about Beau? This handsome boy is incredibly photogenic with those amber eyes and striking just the right pose. In fact, he was far more interested in posing then chasing any of his toys for action shots. If you follow him on Instagram you will see he is very use to having his photo taken on all of the many adventures he and his mom go on. For a pup who is only 1.5 years old, I was pretty surprised how calm & quiet he was. He was all about his Mom, his bully stick and sniffing the air, a perfect gentlemen. Now is this what someone would consider “too much” like a pit bull? Guess their loss is Tessa’s gain because these two are a pretty perfect match!

Evanna - 11/6/21

Name/Age: Evanna - 6 y/o

Family Members: Gary (Dad), Ali (Mom), Vikki (doggie sister) and Tori (doggie sister)

How long has Evanna been in the family? More then 3 years

Professions: Ali: Administrative Engineer, Gary: Parkour Gym Program Director

Location: Sharpsburg, GA

Nicknames: Ev or Vonnie

5 words/phrases that best describe Evanna?

  1. Grateful

  2. Gentle

  3. People Lover

  4. Cuddly

  5. Motivated

What makes Evanna unique? She pretends to be asleep when we want to move her. If she’s lying on the bed and we ask her to move (P.S. she responds to the phrase “excuse me”) so we can sit down, she’ll look at you, then close her eyes really hard and pretend like she’s asleep. She absolutely will not move and goes completely limp.

Evanna in the grass!

Rescue Story: Ali volunteered for the rescue organization, Angels Among Us, which found her roaming the streets in November 2017 after what seemed to be a terrible dog fight. She was completely emaciated and missing half of her face. Her wounds even had maggots growing out of them. You could see straight to her skull, which had a large hole in it (possibly a puncture from another dog’s tooth or someone attempting to shoot her in the head). Her injuries were so severe that we didn’t know if she would live. We didn’t think she had her right eye at the time either. After gaining attention from a local news story calling her “The Wonder Dog”, the donations were able to save her life. Her face was reconstructed and stitched up. The vets also noticed that her eyeball was still intact and functioning. She was then fostered by an amazing volunteer, Cristiana, who played a massive role in her recovery. The following February, she was the guest of honor at the Angels Among Us Gala and had a custom-made, hand-sewn gown just for the occasion. Ali worked with Cristiana at their day job and would see Evanna daily. In January 2018, we took over fostering Evanna, and the rest was history. She came into our lives and changed them forever. We don’t know exactly where she came from, but we knew she was finally home.

Graphic Photo: When Evanna came into rescue.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Evanna wants to be anywhere people are, so we enjoy taking her places with us. She loves meeting new people, especially at a drive-thru that gives out treats. She gets so excited to go on an adventure and possibly make a new friend. Evanna lights up whenever we pull up to the gym Gary works at because she knows the place is full of kids willing to give out endless belly rubs (and drop a crumb or two). She also loves to play and learn something new. For example, she had no idea what a tennis ball was when we met her. It took a while for her to learn to catch one, but now she’s a borderline pro.

What is life like since you rescued Evanna? Whole would be a good word to describe it. The best part of every day is coming home to the love and affection of our dogs. No matter what mood you’re in, seeing your dog’s excitement and eagerness to greet you just melts away any worries. Evanna’s personality has grown tremendously since being adopted. At first, she was so shy and timid, afraid to make a mistake or anger us, I think. Now, she’s an “actual dog”, as we call it. She’s so vibrant and happy and sweet. Watching her grow into this incredible, patient, and loving dog makes us so grateful to be a part of her journey. And I think she’s grateful to have us too.

Photographers Note: Just look at this beautiful girl! What a difference love, support and a great care can make. I thought it was important to show how Evanna came into rescue because there are so many dogs out there with similar stories that come to rescues or shelters with horrible injuries. Then there are just as many angels who want to rehabilitate these dogs and give them loving forever homes. To meet this girl, with her quiet sweet demeaner is just heart warming. If you didn’t know her past and didn’t notice the small scar on her head, she is any other loved family member. Chasing her tennis ball while sporting the latest in pibble fashion, even showing off some of her climbing skills and her love to be held by her Dad. I love that this family focus’s on the present and the future, not knowing her past is probably hard but all they care about is that she is loved, happy and clearly has an amazing wardrobe! Such a true pleasure to meet this “Wonder Dog”.

Hugs for Dad!

Cowboy & Georgia - 10/24/21

Name/Age: Cowboy - approx. 7 y/o & Georgia - approx. 2 y/o

Family Members: Johnny & Erin, Miss Sippy - kitty sister & Pickles - other kitty sister

How long have Cowboy & Georgia been in the family? Cowboy- 7 years, PAWS thinks he was about 6 months old when we adopted him. Georgia - 2 years.

Professions: Erin - executive producer at Fox5 Atlanta. Johnny is full time with Georgia National Guard.

Location: Douglasville, GA.

Nicknames: Cowboy: CB, Angel Dog, Mouse Dog (he really looks like an oversized mouse), Bubby, Bub Bub, Lunch box, C-burs (likely from CB…not really sure)

Georgia: Georgie Porgie, Jo Jo, Hippo, Steve Buscemi (she has crazy eyes)

Cowboy

Georgia

5 words/phrases that best describe Cowboy & Georgia?

Cowboy:

  1. Loyal

  2. Empathetic (I swear he can sense our feelings and emotions. He goes to his bed if he thinks his mom and dad are arguing. He comforts you when you are sad. He licks your tears and sticks his cold nose on your face).

  3. Gentle (we raised baby chicks around him. He used to roam free with his chicken sisters in the backyard)

  4. Popular (The neighborhood kids all come over to play with him and Georgia. Sometimes I feel like our adult friends only come over to hang out with Cowboy)

  5. Patient (Cowboy puts up with so much. His sister mauls him. Our nieces and nephews climb all over him. He has never shown any aggression toward children who can sometimes be a lot to handle.)

Side note—My husband picked 5 words as well. Here are his:

Amazing, vibrant, energetic, loving, intense, calculating (I guess he picked 6)

Georgia:

  1. Cuddle Bug

  2. Bull in a China Shop

  3. Goofy

  4. Jumpy

  5. Affectionate

What makes Cowboy & Georgia unique? Cowboy tries so hard to please us. When it’s late at night and his sister barks at him to play, CB will look at me for permission because he knows his Dad is sleeping. He absolutely HATES getting in trouble and he LOVES to be praised. (He rarely gets in trouble)

His favorite thing in the world is to be “sharked” by his Dad. That’s when Johnny turns him on his back and holds him. We call it “sharking” because sharks fall asleep if you roll them on their backs. Cowboy will shark himself if you don’t pull him into your lap and flip him over.

He HATES carbs. Ever since he was little he has only liked meat. He won’t touch french fries, bread, chips, tots, etc. He will eat a piece of popcorn, but only after he tosses it in the air all over the living room first.

He loves cats. He lives with two cats, but thinks every cat in the world should love him. Several cats live at our vet’s office and he tries to love on them every time we go. Unfortunately they don’t take kindly to affection from a pit bull.

Georgia doesn’t usually lick. She just presses her little snout to your face to give kisses.  She also bunny hops up and down stairs instead of running with all four legs. Her eyes are one of her most unique qualities. They are very clear and light and one eyeball seems to look off to the side—hence the Steve Buscemi reference.

Airborne Cowboy

Georgia commanding her stick!

Rescue Story - Cowboy: After a year or so of dating, my now husband and I decided we wanted to adopt a dog. I saw puppies on PAWS Atlanta’s Instagram account, so we decided to check them out one weekend. When we got there, we learned the puppies weren’t ready to be adopted. We decided to stroll through the dog facility anyway. All of the dogs were barking their heads off, but there was one dog in a single stall sitting about 2 feet back from the door. He wasn’t acting scared or shy, he was just sitting like a good boy looking at the people passing him by. I too passed him by, but my husband couldn’t take his eyes off of him. I eventually pulled Johnny away and we finished our tour through the facility. We sat on a bench out front to talk about the puppies again. I saw Johnny’s face and knew exactly what he was thinking. I asked him if he wanted to go see the “good” dog again. He said yes… and the rest was history.

We took Cowboy on a walk around PAWS and played ball in their fenced in area. We were in LOVE. We made the best decision of our lives that day. Cowboy came home with us and our world has revolved around him ever since.

As for his pre-adoption history, we don’t know a whole lot. PAWS told us they found him tied to their mailbox one morning. Apparently abandoned by his previous owners. They said he was the first pit bull their shelter accepted in years. If you look on their website now, they happily take in pit bulls every day.  That’s because my Cowboy proved his breed is the most loving and gentle of all. He had two PAWS foster families before we adopted him. Both loved him and still ask for updates from time to time.

Georgia: A co-worker brought her to my job after her brother’s pit bull had a littler of puppies. They were looking for homes for all the babies and I absolutely fell in love with her. We weren’t even talking about adopting another dog, but I immediately connected with Georgia. I took her home with me that night and the rest is history. She was very skinny when we got her, but that did not last long.

Cowboy making himself comfy on the way to his forever home.

Skinny dirty little Georgia!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love taking Cowboy swimming. We live next to Sweetwater Creek State Park. There are several creeks in our neighborhood and we let him off leash to explore and run through the water. He is obsessed with swimming in lakes and ponds. He would fetch a stick in the middle of the lake all day long if you would let him.

Cuddling! Georgia is an award-winning cuddled. She nuzzles her nose in your armpit or neck and literally won’t let you go until you give her a bear hug and kisses. She so funny because she doesn’t lick like her brother. Instead, Georgia puts her entire muzzle to your lips like she’s giving you a people kiss.

One of our favorite family activities is going on golf cart rides and rides on the side-by-side. Georgia actually loves going off-road riding.

What is life like since you rescued Cowboy & Georgia? As I mentioned, Cowboy completely changed our lives. He made our family whole. He does everything with us. We take him and his sister on vacations with us. They are our children. I probably wouldn’t have made it through my husband’s deployment to Iraq without Cowboy. That dog was glued to my side during the entire 10 months. He leaned on me and I leaned on him. He licked my tears and cuddled with me at night. He did zoomies to cheer me up and he gave me a reason to get up and get outside to hike or just go for walks. During those months he was a mama’s boy. I can’t say the same for the time before and since the deployment. He’s definitely a daddy’s dog most of the time. He acts like Johnny has been gone a month every day when he gets home from work. Those two have a very special bond.

I can’t imagine life before Georgia. We were nervous when we first adopted her because it was very spur of the moment. After the first week we knew we had made the right choice. She and Cowboy became instant besties. She doesn’t go anywhere or do anything without her big brother. She sleeps in the middle of our bed and keeps us warm or burning up at night. Georgia is a huge source of laughter in our house. Her crazy eyes and goofy personality brighten every single day.

Social Media: Cowboy @the_village_cowboy

Georgia @the_last_cowgirl

Photographers Note: Meeting these two pups was a blast. After the initial bowtie shot in their backyard, we went to a second location in their neighborhood. An area that was fenced in and had a pond. From then on it, was constant movement….there was swimming, ball fetching, stick wrangling, you name it! Whenever Cowboy went in the water Georgia waited patiently for him to come out and play with her again. After all that play and a ton of photos taken; they jumped in their truck, tongues hanging out, happily exhausted and didn’t even look back. Time for naps!

The sibling bond!

Stella - 10/17/21

Name/Age: Stella - 14 y/o

Family Members: Diana (human mom), Hunter (human dad), John (human brother, 3 years old), Haynes (human brother, 2 years old)

How long has Stella been in the family? 12 years

Professions: Diana – admissions consultant; Hunter - CPA

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Stelly, Hambone (when she is acting like a goober)

5 words/phrases that best describe Stella?

  1. Loving

  2. Sweet

  3. Best Friend

  4. Lazy

  5. Nanny dog

What makes Stella unique? Stella loves to be hot. She begs to sit in the sun on our back deck on 95-degree days, and in the winter we have to put up a barrier so she doesn’t sit in the fireplace when the fire is going. Stella also has an obsession with licking belly buttons. As soon as she sees one, she goes right for it. It was a funny party trick when we were in our early 20s, and now it’s a big hit with the toddlers.

Beautiful Stella in her favorite grass bed.

Rescue Story: I (Diana) rescued Stella from a kill shelter in Virginia when I was fresh out of college and looking for a companion. When I walked down the row of kennels, every dog was barking—except for Stella. When she saw me, she smashed her face up against the chain-link fence so I could pet her through it. When I did a meet-and-greet in one of the shelter’s rooms, Stella acted like we were long-lost friends and sat right in my lap. It was then that I noticed her blocky head and her pit bull smile, and I got nervous about adopting her. (she is half pit, half lab/bichon frise according to DNA test). I hadn’t had any exposure to pit bulls besides the negative press I’d seen on the news, and I was worried about getting kicked out of my apartment complex for having a breed that wasn’t allowed. I’m not proud to say that I left her there at the shelter after that initial visit.

I proceeded to visit three more shelters that day, but I did not find any dogs that even came close to Stella’s gentle, loving demeanor. I decided then and there to take the risk on this dog that came with no known history—or even a name. I’m so glad I did. Stella has been my loyal best friend for 12 years, through cross-state moves, breakups, getting married, and starting a family.

While most people worry about their dogs when they decide to have children, I had zero hesitations about Stella when I brought each of my two sons into the world. Stella loves nothing more than being around babies and children. There’s a reason pit bulls used to be known as “nanny dogs,” and Stella is a shining example of this.

Stella settling in and already getting spoiled with a fancy bandana!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Stella is—and always has been—our “lazy dog.” One of her favorite activities is lounging in the long grass in our yard on a sunny day. My two young boys collect sticks for her to chew on, and she doesn’t have to move a muscle. It’s her version of a spa day, and you can see in her face how happy it makes her.

What is life like since you adopted Stella? Stella is a member of our family, and we treat her as such. We include her in all family celebrations and bring her with us almost everywhere we go. Each May, we celebrate her birthday on “Cinco de Stella” and throw her a party. Stella’s been kayaking in Virginia, attended football tailgates in North Carolina, and has even tubed down the Chattahoochee.

Social Media: Instagram: @stellygrams

Photographers Note: First things first, many people will look at this beautiful senior pup and say no way is she a pit bull. She has a thick soft coat ( I mean you want to bury your face in it soft), with a very fluffy tail and a longer snout., what says pit bull in that? Well a DNA test says otherwise. Stella is yet another great example why BSL legislation doesn’t work (among many other reasons), as it’s based on visual assessment of a dogs breed.

Now onto the sweetness of this girl. Seeing her with her boys, is just heart warming. There is really nothing better when kids get to grow up with a dog that loves and adores them. When we did their family shot, Stella was so funny. She didn’t really want to cooperate, instead she rolled in her favorite grass, gave kisses to John and then finally decided to come front and center, as if to say…this feature is about me, right? Big bonus for the boys, they have a live in belly button cleaner! LOL

Kisses, Kisses, Kisses

Norma Jean - 10/16/21

Name/Age: Norma Jean - 12 y/o

Family Members: Hailly, Matthew & Stewart – dog (12 y/o)

How long has Norma Jean been in the family? 9 years

Professions: Nurse & IT Architect

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Norms, NJ, Normie, Python Pig, Python Pig Turtle Squirrel Dog, Ladybug, Baby Girl, Piggy, Merper

5 words/phrases that best describe Norma Jean?

  1. Talkative

  2. Goofy

  3. Intelligent

  4. Affectionate

  5. Gregarious

What makes Norma Jean unique? Norma has SO MUCH TO SAY all the time! She’s so smart, funny, inquisitive and I’ve never met a dog who will tell you exactly what she wants! She knows the difference between a car ride and a walk and she’ll tell you what she’s in the mood for. She’s also a very loyal companion and even though she’s had a rough past she has so much love to give and wants to make you happy.

Earzzzz!!

Rescue Story: Matt’s friends owned a dog rescue and asked Matt to foster Norma. At that point in his life he wasn’t ready to own a dog but as a lifetime dog lover was willing to help out. After a few weeks of fostering the dog rescue owners came to Matt and said – we are shutting down the rescue and can’t find anyone to take Norma so if you don’t want her we will put her to sleep. =( Of course he couldn’t have that happen! He had fallen in love with her silly personality. She’s been a very loved member of the family ever since.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We enjoy going on family walks around the neighborhood, playing with toys, having barking parties and snuggles on the couch.

What is life like since your adopted Norma Jean? Poor Norma came from a life of abuse, she has doggy PTSD and can’t be around other animals of any kind. When I came into the picture 6 years ago with Stewart it was a challenge. She has come to tolerate her brother, they even have their own love language but we are still on a crate and rotate program. While crate and rotate may not seem ideal to some they both love their crates and we love them! I couldn’t imagine my life without Norma. She brightens up every day with her goofy antics, is a fantastic snuggle partner and is just so darn lovable! Everyone who meets her falls in love.

Photographers Note: First of all as I was typing up this story, I had to do a double take when I saw her age. I met this girl, there is no way I would have guessed she is 12….7 maybe! She has so much spunk and those speckles on her ears, come on. Everyone always talks about the pit bull smile, which is just big and goofy and adorable; pretty much every dog of this type has it. What I love even more are those dogs that have that shape & definition to their mouth that even when their mouth is closed it looks like they are smiling or smirking in Norma’s case. You can definitely see the marks of Norma’s past on her body but what I love most is this girl lives in the now, as all dogs do. I mean her favorite toy is the Sophie Giraffe teether toy for human babies (which she may or may not have stolen from a baby), seems like she is taking full advantage of her current situation to me!

Jinx & Bubba - 10/2/21

Name/Age: Jinx - 5 y/o & Bubba - approx. 2 y/o

Family Members: Betina

How long have Jinx & Bubba been in the family? Jinx has been in the family 3 years & Bubba 1.5 years.

Profession: Etsy Shop Owner

Location: Athens, GA.

Nicknames: Jinx: Jinxy-Boo

Bubba: Mr. Delicious

Jinx in the back & Bubba in the front.

5 words that best describe Jinx & Bubba?

Jinx:

  1. Stoic

  2. Gentle

  3. Demur

  4. Loyal

  5. Distinguished

Bubba:

  1. Lummox

  2. Oaf

  3. Bowling Ball Head

  4. Delicious

  5. Endearing

What makes Jinx & Bubba unique? Jinx is a loyal and loving companion who would rather seek my attention than that of her own kind. She is my shadow at the dog park and never ever involves herself in any doggy disputes. She is truer than true and a real ambassador for her breed.

Not the wisest dog I have ever had, but absolutely the most lovable. Bubba enjoys a swift run followed by a head first roll into the grass. He never tires of smothering a face with “kithes”, or sitting his 90 lb. ass in your lap.

Sweet Jinx!

Downward Dog Bubba Style

Rescue Stories: A fellow rescue friend (Sandice - Poptart’s Mom) informed me that Jinx (then Indigo) needed an advocate at animal control. Sandice knew bully breeds were and continue to be my favorite. I took Jinx on. She was the longest term resident at the shelter at that point and being a black pit bull, did not bode well for her. Black dogs and bully breeds are very sadly the least likely to be adopted. I took videos and photos and advocated for her on social media. All the while, getting to experience what a lovely dog she was. She wasn’t one to smother you in kisses, or come on too strong. She was distinguished and incredibly gentle. I decided to foster her, and after only about a week or two, decided she could not leave.

Sandice informed me that he had been returned to a rescue org. here in Athens, GA after having spent his formative years in a home in CT. Bubba, then Simba, was confiscated as a puppy and brought to our local animal control. He was rescued and transported to a home in CT., after almost a year of what I have heard was almost constant crate life, he was returned to the Athens based rescue because the adoptive home became pregnant and no longer wanted him. Sandice was extremely worried that he would not get the exposure he needed and asked if I could foster him. The rest is history.

It should be noted that Bubba was not housebroken and as per my vet, probably not given access to water while his humans were away. This resulted in months of overcompensating his water intake to the point where he was urinating oceans of water inside the house. I was so worried that he may have diabetes or some form of urinary infection. With much patience, and lots of initial mopping, Bubba has become my favorite companion. He no longer has any issues with the exception of bad knees due to poor breeding…..that is an entirely different and expensive story! ;-)

What is your favorite pastime as family? Laying in bed with Jinxs’ head on my shoulder. With Bubba, park time is our favorite time. We try to get out at least three times a week for hiking or park socialization.

What is life like since you rescued Jinx & Bubba? I have always said “who needs a partner (husband or wife) when dogs exist??? My dogs bring me more joy and unconditional love than i could ever experience from a human. This oaf (Bubba) brings me more joy and laughter than I could ever express in words. He is the light in every single day.

Photographers Note: My second shoot of the day in Athens, was with this wonderful family. I think Betina’s description of both of them is spot on. Jinx was a little more shy (although I did get some run by kisses) and very camera shy. She was just not having it. Bubba on the other hand just a lovable hunk who was up for any and everything. Bubba’s story just broke my heart but in true dog form, they live in the now and that life is in his rear view. Now he has a pittie sister he adores and a mom that loves & spoils him. Not too shabby for a pup who grew up in a crate. Sadly Jinx’s story is all too common and one we have discussed before related to black dogs, and black pitties especially. I had such a blast with these volunteers, lots of laughter trying to get these two to cooperate. Then again, isn’t that one of the best parts of having a dog companion their ability to make you laugh!

Rescue Story: Poptart was picked up as a stray with horrific injuries to her eyes. One was completely ruptured and the other was in bad shape. She was so petrified that the officer had to use a catchpole to capture her and she was labeled ‘aggressive’ at the time of capture. We have a non-profit in Athens called AthensPets who offered to cover her initial vetting and surgery for double eye removal. After her surgery she was deemed a sweetheart at the vet, who speculated the amount of pain she was in was tremendous and led to her ‘aggressive’ state. It is believed that she was likely born with glaucoma that went untreated until the pressure built up and her eyes ruptured. She also had blisters on all four paw pads from hot pavement. We think she was likely dumped after her eye ruptured. She’d already had a litter of puppies as well. I was on a list at the shelter to be a ‘last resort, short term medical foster’ for Poptart. I volunteered at the shelter and work across the street from the vet she was at, so picked her up after work so that she wouldn’t have to go to the shelter and could heal in a quiet home. Within just a few hours, I knew she’d never be leaving. She is that special.

Before & after surgery.

Before & after surgery.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Poptart loves spending time at a friend’s lake house and loves swimming in big open bodies of water.

What is life like since you rescued Poptart? Optimism and wonder has been renewed in our lives since Poptart has been here. She is such a testament to live for today, this moment, and never dwell on the past’s negative experiences.

Photographers Note: I don’t know where to start. It was such an amazing honor to meet and photograph this special girl. Her joy and confidence are just so inspiring and you can’t help but smile at her as she races around in her various outfits. To see this dog after only being with her family for 3-ish months navigate a good size farm setting with only small verbal corrections from her Mom when she gets too close to something, is just amazing. To read her story and think she was once labeled aggressive is just so hard to believe. She is so sweet and loves to give smooches. You can tell she has never met a stranger and what huge bonus as you know this beautiful girl is meant to change perceptions. Not only for pit bull type dogs but also those dogs who may have different needs and look a little different. No one needs to feel sorry for this girl, she is living her best life which is 1000% in the present. Something we can all learn from!

Lincoln - 9/11/21

Name/Age: Lincoln - 1 y/o

Family Members: Jasmine, Bruce - feline, 7 y/o & Ivy -feline, 7 y/o

How long has Lincoln been in the family? Since Oct 2020

Profession: Respiratory therapist

Location: Buford, GA

Nicknames: Linc, Linky, Curtis

5 words/phrases that best describe Lincoln?

  1. Sweet

  2. Playful

  3. Cuddly

  4. Smiley

  5. Social Butterfly

What makes Lincoln unique? Lincoln has never met a stranger! He loves meeting new humans and dogs. Honestly, social settings are his element. Dog parks, daycare, beaches, restaurants, you name it. He loves the attention he gets but knows how to read a room and gives others space if needed.

Joyful Boy!

Rescue Story: As many people did in 2020, I was avid in search of adding a dog to my little pet family. I felt like I was at the right point in my life to be able to raise a puppy, but due to the high demand of puppies at the time, I was open to any aged dog that seemed to catch my eye. I was checking the Petfinder app several times a day for 4 months before I saw a post made by The W-Underdogs. They had only had the listing up for 30 minutes before I applied, so I was crossing my fingers I’d get a call back. Within an hour, I had my interview, and approval to adopt a puppy from the litter of 12 in the following week. I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to meet the pups. Mom had been rescued from a drug dealer who pursued breeding as a side hustle, and thankfully gave birth while in rescue. This story may sound familiar because it is! Sir, a Shine a Light Alum from April 2021, is from the same litter. When meeting the puppies, something about Lincoln kept sticking out to me from the rest of the litter. I couldn’t figure out if it was how he played, how responsive he was, or maybe it was just fate. He’s been my special little boy ever since!

Family!!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Trips to the beach! Before we were in Tampa, Lincoln was not inclined to play with water at all, but after some coaxing, he has become quite the water-lover. He loves playing fetch on the shore and swimming out in the water. Now that we’re back in Atlanta, I had to get him a kiddie pool to keep that side of him pleased.

What is life like since you rescued Lincoln? I travel for work, but had stopped for some time to raise Lincoln. I recently started traveling again now that he’s older, and he’s seeing more of the world than I would have predicted! We were in Tampa, FL for the summer, and will be heading to Brooklyn, NY next. From country boy, to beach bum, to city slicker, he’s enjoying learning about the world around him. Atlanta will always be our home base, and he has quite a group of friends here. It’s great to have him around with me while I’m away on contract. He’s allowed me to be more social in new places, and I love exposing him to new experiences.

Social Media: Instagram @thebenitezbunch

Photographers Notes: The first word I thought of when I saw Lincoln was HUNK! What an absolutely gorgeous boy, his markings are so unique with the mix of solid and tan merle spots, then you add those blue eyes! Course after the initial swoon, you realize what a big goofball and love bug he is and then on top of that he is so well trained for a 1 year old; smarts must run in the family. As Jasmine mentioned, Lincoln’s brother Sir was featured back in April of this year. It’s always fun to meet litter mates and see the similarities and the differences. They definitely both have that pibble smile and the desire to please their family.

I do need to add, that so many people will say they don’t want to rescue because they want a puppy. There are an abundance of puppies in rescue. We have featured many here, who were rescued as puppies. Many were born in rescue…..wanting a puppy is never an excuse not to consider rescue. (off my soap box)

Maggie - 7/31/21

Name/Age: Maggie - 6-7 y/o

Family Members: Gabby & Pierre

How long has Maggie been in the family? 4 years

Professions: high school teacher & consultant

Location: Decatur, GA.

Nicknames: Maggie Dog

5 words/phrases that best describe Maggie?

  1. Sassy

  2. Goofball

  3. Playful

  4. Snuggly

  5. Friendly

What makes Maggie unique? Maggie makes a “roooo-ing” sound when she wants your attention, she’ll also make it as a “hello” to people we meet on our walks.

Maggie on the Move!

Rescue Story: We first met Maggie, at the time Cadaba, when we took her out for Dog for A Day from LifeLine Animal Shelter. Like many shelter dogs, Maggie was super energetic when we first got her from the kennel. Once we took a walk and got back to the couch, she settled right in. After taking her out two weekends, we decided to foster her but we knew we’d end up adopting her. Maggie was brought in as a stray and was in the shelter for 10 months before we adopted her.

You driving me to my forever home or shall I?

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We like to go on hikes together. Stone Mountain is our usual hike but Maggie loves exploring new places.

What is life like since you rescued Maggie? Maggie’s life is now full of belly rubs (which she demands often). After our morning walk, Maggie spends her days rotating between laying on the couch or the bed and sunning herself outside. We absolutely love having Maggie in our lives, she brings joy and love to us everyday.

Photographers Note: Maggie is such a bubbly and happy girl. She was so welcoming when I arrived. Although she quickly tired of “performing” for the photographer, can’t say I blame her it was a muggy day. The fact this dog was in the shelter for 10 months was shocking to me. Although I would have to venture a guess that she fell victim to something called Black Dog Syndrome. Black dogs are less likely to be adopted from shelters. There are many theories why, be it they don’t photograph as well for adoption photos, people associate them with evil or misfortune (like black cats) or their hair is more noticeable when shedding so it’s a housekeeping thing, Top it off that she is also a dog with a certain size head, well the cards are stacked against her. I love that Gabby & Pierre took advantage of the wonderful Dog for the Day program at our local city shelters. Great way to give pups a break but also a way to get to know the dog if you are thinking of adopting, a test drive if you will. (they also have a full weekend program). Yet another reason dogs should be looked at as individuals. How could anyone resist this goofy, smiling, beautiful girl?

Nicknames: Stella Boo Boo

5 words/phrases that best describe Stella?

  1. Energetic

  2. Loving

  3. Muscular

  4. Beautiful

  5. Goofy

What makes Stella unique? She is very gentle with our son. They are best buddies.

Stella on the move…..

Rescue Story: I was laying in bed one night looking at pet finder emails. I saw Mama Clem (fka Heidi) with her babies and it was love at first site. We just lost one of our cats so I decided we had room for another animal. I’ve always wanted a bigger dog so I sent the rescue (Rescue Me GA) an email that night. I got a response in 5 minutes at 10:00 pm! They said adoption day would be the next afternoon so I quickly nudged my sleeping husband and said that I would be coming home with this baby tomorrow night. Of course, he agreed! I went after work and adopted her. Everyone was so excited when I got home!

Little Stella heading to her forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? I love watching her play with my son. He laughs and laughs and laughs.

What is life like since you rescued Stella? Life is crazy with 5 animals and a 5 year old son! We’ve always had a ton of animals. She won’t be our last! I will say, 5 is probably our max for now.

Photographers Note: This is my Clementine’s 2nd baby we have featured. (only 6 more to go :) ) This was actually a really special day for me, because after my photo shoot with this wonderful family, there was a birthday party for the puppies who all turned 1 on July 7th. Not all the puppies could make it, but for the ones that could…. once they all got acclimated, it was ON. Non-stop play and fun!! Unfortunately Mama Clem had to stay home because she was healing from her TPLO surgery. Had she attended pretty sure these pups would have tuckered her out after the first 20m. Photo evidence below, which you can see from the haphazard shots, it was constant blue pibble motion. Such a great day for these pups and was such a pleasure to meet more of the wonderful families that have given Clementine’s babies such wonderful homes.

Mikey - 7/18/21

Name: Mikey - 5.5-ish y/o

Family Member: Jessica

How long has Mikey been in the family? 4 years

Profession: High School Teacher

Location: Sandy Springs, GA

Nicknames: Mikes, Monkey, Mikey-bo-bikey (don’t ask)

5 words/phrases that best describe Mikey?

  1. Friendly

  2. Loving

  3. Well Adjusted

  4. Good looking (we get stopped daily by strangers)

  5. Scaredy Cat (he dislikes fireworks & thunder)

What makes Mikey unique? He appears tough but he is a big baby!!! He is afraid of his own shadow.

LET’S PLAY!!!!!

Rescue Story: I was delivering fundraising items to PAWS for their annual fundraiser and I told Laura (works at the shelter) that I would walk some of the pits. She was excited to introduce me to some of them as she is the one I rescued my other dog (also a pit) from. Laura brought out a few dogs and then at the end, MICHAEL came out!!!! She told me he had failed the police program for being “too soft" but he was gorgeous and I wanted to know more. We set up a date for me to bring my senior alpha girl by to meet him. She was a very picky girl. Later we brought him to my place so I could “FOSTER” him for the summer. He was a handful and I was not used to it since I had a senior pit at home that had become low energy over time. Michael was young (1.5yo) and such a good boy but just wanted to play 24/7. As Michael was learning his new space I was trying to remain calm as the two dogs were bonding & playing rough. Michael needed many walks and needed to learn how to tell me he needed to pee!!!! A few times I got overwhelmed and texted Laura how stressed I was. She suggested she promote him more on their website and my heart sank. At that moment, I KNEW we could not part with Michael! I started calling him Mikey (it was much more fitting). Then I started letting him sleep in bed with us and that was the beginning of our new family. His sister passed away about a year and a half later which was extremely difficult for me, but he was the best medicine. Their bond was unbelievable and I have their photos all over the place so we never forget their love!

Heading off to his foster - then forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Mikey loves to go hiking and to go on long walks. The local pet store is walking distance from the house and Mikey can get to it from any direction! He will 100% pull me towards Pet People on every walk possible. They spoil him, give him treats, he plays with the puzzles on the ground and drinks all the water up that they leave out. He even won Mr. FEBRUARY this past February and had his photo and bio posted for the entire month. Any opportunity to ride in the car is also a plus. Especially if we are riding to Pet People! Ha!

What is life like since you rescued Mikey? My life is more active and eventful with Mikey around. Neighbors (kids) stop by just to say hi to Mikey and it melts my heart. He is basically the mayor of my neighborhood and everyone knows and loves him.

Social Media: !nstagram @Handsomedevil_Mikey

Photographers Note: Mikey is truly a big handsome boy. I mean look at those eyes. He was so excited when I arrived to meet a new friend. After a little settle down period he gleefully showed me his deck. Jessica & Mikey have a gorgeous little oasis back there but with Mikey’s size it was definitely a challenge to be able to capture his happiness and joy in tight quarters!! :) . We made it work and he was such a good boy, showing off all his toys and when it was time to do his photo with his Mom, he posed like a champ. The best part of this shoot was at the end. When we finished, Jessica and I were chatting by the front door and he just went full zoomie mode (video was posted on Instagram Reels the day of the shoot), bouncing off the couch , to the ground, around the table and back up on the coach….over and over again! It was his little celebration for a shoot well done!

Tybee - 7/17/21

Name/Age: Tybee - 5 y/o

Family Members: Valerie (human 1) & Benjamin (human 2)

How long has Tybee been in the family? 4 years

Profession: Valerie: Communications Strategy and Branding

Benjamin: Air Force Reserve

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Smoosh, Smooshy, Smooshface, Tybyserus, Tybyserus the Great

5 words/phrases that best describe Tybee?

  1. Goofy

  2. Total Klutz

  3. Hardcore Morning Snuggler

  4. Lover of children, hunter of birds and cats

  5. Zero to 100…back to zero…in 5 seconds

What makes Tybee unique? She thinks everyone in the neighborhood has a treat for her. She sits for random strangers in hopes they’ll pull out a snack. She is obsessed with the Jimmy Carter Farmer’s market. When we go, she goes straight under the tables in hopes of finding a radish or tomato. A vendor gave her a peach once. She thought it was a ball at first. Then she figured it out…

Looks: Her spots – she has a brown patch over one eye so the eyelashes on one eye are brown and on one are white. She’s also a little cross eyed and has the biggest ears ever!

Tybee the Adventurer

Rescue Story: A neighbor found Tybee on the street and brought her to my husband’s house thinking she was Ben’s roommate’s big white bully. It wasn’t, but the neighbor left, and Tybee fell in love with Ben instantly. He let her sleep in his bed that night and woke up covered in flea bites!

He took her to get scanned for a chip. She had one but the phone number was out of service. So, he hung signs in the neighborhood and put her picture on Nextdoor, etc. No luck, so he kept her! Then, six months later, he was walking her and a guy drove up. He said, “Hey, that’s my dog.” Ben was ready to go to battle, but then the guy just said, “…But you can keep her.” He did tell us that they had actually found her as a stray as well, but she ran away from them. Now we keep her on a very tight leash!

Settling in to her new forever home.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Hiking! She hates rain, showers, pools, etc., but she loves to splash in the streams when we go hiking!

What is life like since you rescued Tybee? For her: She’s discovered a love of puzzle toys, farmer’s markets, over-zealous face kisses, and the hosts at the neighborhood restaurants.

For us: we are house-hunting right now. We are literally those people who will only consider houses with 1) a room big enough for king-sized bed because Tybee’s a bed hog and 2) a yard that she will like.

Social Media: Instagram: @tybee_thedog

Photographers Note: I met up with Valerie, Ben & Tybee at a lovely park which is down in a ravine. Very shaded and greenery everywhere., perfect for a hot July day. It was like Tybee was exploring in a jungle! Tybee wasn’t all that interested in me (I tried not to take it personally because I just wanted to love on her so much), she wanted to sniff/explore. When the treats came out, then it was game on. This girl is a master poser, I would take about 20-30 shots of the same pose and about 95% of them were exactly the same. (this is also why she didn’t have a lot of outtakes to post before her story). One of the first things I noticed about this happy girl was her eyes. Yes they are slightly crossed which is adorable, it wasn’t that. It was the color. A beautiful very pale yellow. You would normally see that color in a cat but not very often in dogs, at least the ones I have photographed. You add that with the ears and her perfect pittie smile, this girl needs to be in advertising. Just think of all the treats she could buy with all that ad money! :)

Cappy - 7/11/21

Name/Age: Cappy - 2.5 y/o

Family Members: Ashley

How long has Cappy been in the family? One Year

Profession: Life Sciences Data Privacy Officer

Location: West Midtown, Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: N/A

5 words/phrases that best describe Cappy?

  1. Quirky

  2. Energetic

  3. Living his Best Life

  4. Hates Squirrels

  5. Loves all people

What makes Cappy unique? He is a tripod who can still hop a five foot fence with ease especially if there is a squirrel to chase. He once made it over five fences in my old neighborhood in the dead of winter and by the time I got boots on to chase him he was already back waiting at my front door to be let in. He does not want to run away, he just wants to catch all the squirrels!

Is that a bunny or a Cappy?

Rescue Story: Cappy came to me through a rescue called Rebel Dogs Detroit, where we previously lived. When COVID hit the US, and started spiking in Michigan, resulting in a shutdown, I was living alone and working from home. I decided to spend time fostering dogs but never intended to adopt. My first two pibbles stayed with me for a couple of weeks each but were quickly adopted. The rescue then asked if I would be willing to foster a dog who had just had surgery. Cappy had come to Rebel Dogs as a owner surrender, with a broken leg he had lived with for over a year, and chewed down to the bone because of the pain. Given the extent of the injury there was no way to save his leg and they performed an amputation. I picked him up from the rescue and brought him home and given his past trauma from neglect and mistrust of humans, he refused to come into my house. Not wanting to put any pressure on him, I blew up an air mattress, grabbed a bunch of blankets and we laid down in my back yard to give him time to get comfortable. It took several hours, but he eventually got up and walked over to the door, looked at me, and let me know it was time to go inside. A couple of weeks later, there was a ton of interest from potential adopters, but I knew I had found my best friend, and called the rescue in tears and said I could not give him up and formally adopted him.

What a difference a forever home makes.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Swimming! Shortly after adopting Cappy I met with a rehab specialist who recommended swimming as a low impact form of exercise that is very good for tripods. Cappy also had a dog sitter (and doggy best friend) who loved going to a dog park with a dog beach and dock for diving. It took a while, but Cappy eventually jumped in. To get him more comfortable and ensure he would be as safe as possible in water, we also went to swimming lessons together. He is still a little bit nervous until he gets into the water, but loves swimming and chasing animals in the water!

What is life like since you rescued Cappy? Cappy went from living in pain and fear of humans, to enjoying a “life of luxury” with unlimited walks, all the toys he could ever want, and lots of human and dog friends. I went from being a single young adult who only had to take care of myself, to learning how to be responsible for, and share my life with my best three-legged friend. Our lives are infinitely better together! Despite Cappy’s past trauma, he is sweet, and one of the most empathetic creatures I have ever met. He knows when I’ve had a bad day and doesn’t leave my side.

Social Media: Mine is @sozzzzzle on Instagram and it’s pretty much all pictures of our adventures together. I have been meaning to make him his own! Now might be a good opportunity as I want to help break down the negative stereotypes of his breed, but also show that just because a dog is missing a leg, that it doesn’t mean they can’t have a long happy and healthy life just the same!

Photographers Note: Cappy is truly an amazing guy. There is nothing I love more seeing a tripod dog living their best life and racing around like any other 4-legged pup out there. I also love that he hails from my home state and just like me made the trek to warmer climates!! ; ) Not only did we get to feature this handsome boy but from Ashely volunteering it also led to the saving of another pittie. It took a village but Ashley texted me & asked if I knew of anyway to help a dog that was adopted from Rebel Dogs in Detroit but had been dumped in Georgia. The rescue was desperate to get her back but would have been fine if we could find a local rescue that would take her. Of course as seems to always be the case down here rescues were overwhelmed and shelters were packed. The shelter was going to euthanize her in a few days due to space. I quickly made a decision, I told Ashley I didn’t know of a rescue but I would drive her back to Detroit. I called my sister who lives there and asked if she would meet me half way. Without a hesitation she said sure and a plan was created. Because this dog had to be an only dog, Ashely had a friend watch Cappy while she pulled her from the shelter and spent the night with Ashley until I could take her. This dog’s name was Bubble’s and she is now safely back with Rebel Dogs in a Foster home. My hope is that when I do my Detroit round of SALA dogs (hopefully 2022), Bubbles will be in her forever home and those owners will volunteer! :)

Imogen - 7/10/21

Name/Age: Imogen - 13 mths old. (Born July 7, 2020)

Family Members: Charlye (dog mom), Gina, Annie, Ivo (terrier mix, age 7), Missy (calico cat, age 3)

How long has Imogen been in the family? Around 11 mths

Profession: Legal Administrative Assistant

Location: Lilburn

Nicknames: Butternut Squash (Squash for short), Sugar Muffin

5 words/phrases that best describe Imogen:

  1. Blanket Enthusiast

  2. Big Personality

  3. Cuddler

  4. Thrives in Chaos

  5. Universal vacuum for all things edible

What makes Imogen unique? She is a lap dog at 56.5 pounds (and counting)! She loves to curl up in my lap, bury her face in my arms or clothes, and fall asleep. It is about the sweetest thing I have ever witnessed and is truly a special thing about her.

DO NOT DISTURB: Blowing bubbles in progress

Rescue Story: We found Imogen (FKA Hilary), the last of sweet Clementine’s litter, on an adoption website, and we immediately fell in love with her. On a Sunday, we messaged Rescue Me Georgia. The next day, they responded for us to come get our girl that very Wednesday. She was the tiniest thing in the room at 2 months old with the biggest belly and biggest personality. She put us to work straight away, bossing her big terrier brother, Ivo, around and playing with Missy the cat. Missy and Imogen would play whenever there was a chance to and Ivo would get his puppy bites outside. We are so lucky to also keep in touch with her mama (Clem) and littermates (Stella, Leo, Ava, Hazel, Letty, Nova), and watching all of them grow has been so wonderful on our Facebook Group. Seeing this picture below we knew she was the one.

Puppy Imogen (fka Hilary)

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Imogen and I are backyard people! She is content as can be rolling around in the grass, doing zoomies in the yard, throwing the ball around, and splashing in the kiddie pool. Imogen in the sun is a happy Imogen.

What is life like since you rescued Imogen? It is 10 times more chaotic and dirty, but also a lot sweeter and snuggly. She definitely keeps me on my toes with her puppy energy and her need to inhale every stick, leaf, pinecone, toy, and food within her reach. But, I also get the Imogen who thinks she’s a lap dog, and the Imogen who loves to be wrapped up in soft blankets and rubbed on the head.

Photographers Notes: Walking into this photo shoot I was very excited. This beautiful girl is my dog Clementine’s daughter and our first volunteer from her litter. (Clementine’s story will be featured here in the future) So does that make me her Grandma? LOL Ok maybe not, but I was still so excited to meet her and see what, if any traits were passed down from Mama to baby. It was a warm day so she was less enthusiastic to run around the yard and play (did not stop her from leaving her georgia clay impressions all over me LOL), but once the pool was filled up she immediately got in and plopped down in the cool refreshing water. Pretty sure that is not a shared trait with her Mama! It was so funny watching her and seeing certain mannerisms and looks that totally reminded me of Clementine. As Charlye mentioned we are all so fortunate to have a Facebook group that keeps all the owners of the litter and mama connected; sharing photos and stories of all their silly antics. 1 pup volunteer, 1 is in the edit que and 6 more to get scheduled. (fingers crossed)

Gabriel - 7/3/21

Name/Age: Gabriel - approx. 2 yrs

Family Members: Sarah is a 9-year old pit bull rescue; Ruby is a 5-year old Shepherd-Rottie mix rescue; Possum (9), Harriet (15), and Cori (12) are all rescue cats; and my name is Daryl Lisa, the sole human

How long has Gabriel been in the family? 4 mths

Profession: freelance graphic designer & writer

Location: Atlanta, GA

Nicknames: I call Gabriel “Gabe”

5 words/phrases that best describe Gabriel?

  1. Exuberant

  2. Healing

  3. Curious

  4. Gentle

  5. Miraculous

What makes Gabriel unique? He came to me with a badly broken femur, and he never complained—though he was very shut down; his recovery after a complex surgery has been like polishing coal into a diamond as he’s learned to live again, run again, play again, pain-free.

Family Tug!

Rescue Story: I fostered six dogs during the pandemic through Fulton County LifeLine and Angels Among Us Pet Rescue. Gabriel was my seventh. Gabe was running loose as a stray with a clear lame leg for six weeks before a good samaritan trapped him and took him to a rural shelter. The shelter staff contacted Angels Among Us because Gabe had such a beautiful disposition and needed a rescue to assume the cost of his surgery. I saw his heartbreaking photos and videos, and though I thought I was taking a break from fostering, I agreed to take him in so he could be saved. Of course, then he proceeded to save ME, and I can’t fathom life without him. The first day he met me, he shook from head to toe; and when we went out in the backyard, he hid under the deck and didn’t come out for an hour. He used only three of his legs because his rear femur was completely broken in two, leaving the ball of the bone stuck in the hip joint and the smashed end of the femur moving and crunching freely inside his leg. After I’d had him for several weeks, and his tail had finally come from between his legs, and my dogs had helped him adjust and rest and gain confidence, he got his Femoral Head Osteoctomy (at which time the vet also pulled a shotgun pellet from his leg) through Angels Among Us and Peachtree Creek Animal Hospital. Within a few days, I started seeing, not just the quiet, gentle, mild-mannered Gabe, but the boisterous, joyful Gabe start to emerge. Three weeks after that, I Foster Failed with a capital F. Now Gabe’s favorite activities are sleeping under the covers, wrestling with his dog siblings, and helping me care for orphan foster kittens. Oh, and zoomies.

Poor scared boy before his wonderful forever home.

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Gabriel loves, loves, loves to race around the backyard and nip at his dog-sister, Ruby’s, heels to entice her to play. We all sit out under the trees together and enjoy HIS joy. He’s also a pretty epic sleeper complete with snoring.

What is life like since you rescued Gabriel? He came into my life when I needed a little extra emotional support. His sweet soul and his rebirth have uplifted and sustained me probably more than anything I’ve done for him. Watching him embrace life, with pain and without it, has been a lesson and a gift.

Photographers Note: I am sure you can imagine my arrival was greeted with a lot of excitement; it’s pretty hard walking into a house with multiple dogs without it. I made my way in sat down so everyone could get use to me, do the appropriate level of sniffing to ensure I was “ok”. Then we moved to the pups enormous backyard.. Gabriel was pretty shy at first and wasn’t overly thrilled with having his photo taken. Daryl tried to get him to play with some of his toys and he just wasn’t up for it. Finally the tug won and the best part was he kept an eye on me while I was snapping away, as it to say “are you getting this? Make sure you get my best side!” He is such a sweet handsome boy and to know of his past you would never guess by seeing him today. The beauty of dogs, they are so resilient. Sadly it seems pit bull type dogs seem to see the most trauma due to their looks and how people treat them. I wish the person who shot Gabe could see him now and know they didn’t stop him from having the life he so deserved; a big family of 4-legged’s and a Mom that adores him!

Family!

Lou - 6/26/21

Name/Age: Lou - 6.5 y/o

Family Members: Jennifer & Zach

How long has Lou been in the family? Since 2017

Professions: Jennifer is an Attorney & Zach is a Civil Engineer for the United States Air Force.

Location: Jennifer is in Decatur, GA.& Zach is stationed at Tyndall AFB in Florida.

Nicknames: Lulu, Lula, Pumpkin, Baby, Sweetheart

5 words/phrases that best describe Lou?

  1. Happy (gets happy tail a lot)

  2. Nosey Neighbor

  3. Clingy/Cuddly

  4. Silly

  5. Smart

What makes Lou unique? Lou loves her Kong ball so much that it is a security blanket. She has to take it everywhere & every few months when it gets chewed up, Jennifer has to buy a new one.

Kong Ball in full effect!

Rescue Story: Before Jennifer adopted Lou, Lou had a different life with a different owner. (So Jennifer was told by the rescue) Lou was taken from her previous owner due to abuse/neglect. Lou was taken in by a rescue called Guardians of the Green Mile located in Northwest Indiana. The rescued learned that Lou was pregnant and so did the previous owner. The previous owner wanted her back. However, Lou had complications and lost all but 1 pup in the litter. Also due to complications and having a C-section, the rescue went ahead and spayed her. Upon learning this information the previous owner no longer wanted Lou back since he could no longer continue to breed her. While the rescue was waiting for Lou to heal from pregnancy, a different rescue in Michigan contacted Guardians of the Green Mile because they had a litter of pups, with no mother to nurse them. Those pups were brought down and Lou nursed those pups until they were adopted out. Lou spent some time with a foster mom before Jennifer took Lou home.

In April 2017, Jennifer adopted Lou while in law school in NW Indiana. Lou and Jennifer immediately bonded. In the first weekend Lou learned how to play fetch and has not put a ball down since. Jennifer & Lou moved to Decatur in 2018. Jennifer started dating Zach in 2020 & got married in June 2021. Lou has bonded with Zach as well. Lou prefers his lap over Jennifer’s now. Lou went with Zach & Jennifer on a hike where Zach proposed to Jennifer. Lou was so over joyed she spilled the wine.

Official forever home announcement!!!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Lou loves playing fetch, sunbathing, car rides to see Zach & going for walks/hikes. Lou did not enjoy the one time Jennifer & Zach took her kayaking because could not pick who she wanted to be with & kept jumping between the kayaks. Lou does not enjoy the beach (taking after her owners)

What is life like since you rescued Lou? Jennifer was in law school when adopting Lou, which may not have seemed like a good idea at the time but it has been an amazing journey. With Lou by Jennifer’s side, it gave her a routine back and helped with her sanity during law school. Lou made sure she had a regular food and sleep schedule. It was an easy adjustment. Lou helped Jennifer study for the bar exam and continues to be a good supporter while she is doing court via zoom.

Zach was not a dog person and had to warm up to Lou, which was pretty easy for Lou. Lou didn’t give him a choice and now Zach can’t imagine life without her. He spoils her just as much as Jennifer. Zach calls frequently to talk to Lou when he is away. Lou always perks her ear up and grabs her ball. Lou can now identify the sound of the truck when he pulls up to the house. Lou waits for him to come home while he is away.

Lou has not yet met a person she didn’t like. However, she is a little protective around new people. Once she brings you her ball, you are best friends. We are working on socializing her still. Lou loves people food, like apples & bananas but also enjoys a good donut & peanut butter ice cream treats. Lou loves bedtime cuddles where she can be the little spoon with as much skin to skin contact as possible (personal space is not a thing). Jennifer maintains contact with the former foster mom & rescue to let them know how she is doing.

Photographers Note: Johnny Cash had “ A Boy named Sue” and now we have “A Girl Named Lou”. Sounds like a hit song to me. What a story this girl has and boy did she hit the jackpot with her forever home. Knowing where she came from and how she is living now, just makes your heart smile. When I met up with this family at one of the many lovely parks in and around the Atlanta area, Hahn Woods. I heard Lou before I saw her. She is a vocal girl but what a personality she has. She really was all about her red kong ball and once she got use to me pointing a camera in her face, she was pretty good with my presence too. When Jennifer & Zach told me the engagement story with Lou dumping over the wine. I had to laugh. I am sure at the time Zach may not have been thrilled she ruined their special moment, but Lou sure did make it so they will never forget her role in that wonderful day & solidified a family of three! A little side note here, I was more then a little surprised as I was publishing this story that Zach didn’t start out as a dog person…..ummm What? This girl has him wrapped around her paw now….nice work Lou another pittie convert in the books!

Finn - 6/19/21

Name/Age: Finn - approx. 3 y/o

Family Members: Meara & Jovan

How long has Finn been in the family? 8 weeks total (4 weeks official- he is a foster fail/success!)

Professions: Meara is a Public Health Analyst & Jovan is a Software Engineer

Location: Atlanta, GA.

Nicknames: Finny, Little Man

5 words/phrases that best describe Finn?

  1. Goofy

  2. Cuddlebug

  3. Playful

  4. Loving

  5. Friendly

What makes Finn unique? His ears! Also he loves to do morning stretchies where he will let out very audible yawns. Sometimes his top lip gets stuck behind his bottom teeth and he looks hilarious.

Happiest Boy!

Rescue Story: I saw Finn’s (then Dolphin) picture on the Lifeline foster parents page and decided that I needed to meet him! Something about his photos and description just stole my heart. I have fostered in the past, and recently lost my foster fail cat to health complications back in April. Finn has been a welcome addition to the family & helped us to heal after the loss of our cat.

The shelter does not know much about Finn’s past prior to coming to the shelter- he was originally at Fulton County Animal Services and due to a persistent limp he was transferred to Lifeline Community Animal Center for observation. They loved him so much that the staff at CAC begged to keep him as he was so well mannered and friendly. He then became the resident playgroup Rockstar. He was adopted & returned 3 times (for no fault of his own- the adopters changed their mind or did not feel like a dog fit their lifestyle). Whatever his past prior to the shelter was, despite his scars he has a lot of love to give and was perfectly house trained and well mannered. Due to his fan club at the shelter and their hard work to get the word out about him- he was able to come home with me just before he needed his final push of heartworm treatment – and we absolutely fell in love with his goofy personality, friendly attitude to all dogs and people, and desire to be a snuggly lapdog despite his 65 pound self.

The peaceful sleep of a forever home!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? We love to play- he loves to play with his stuffed monkey & do zoomies around the house and yard. Also love a good snuggle on the couch & we are taking more adventures now that he can get more exercise post HW treatment. He loves to hop in the car & see new places/meet new people!

What is life like since you rescued Finn? Life has been great so far! He is settling in nicely. He goes to Frogs2Dogs once a week currently for day camp & will start going to more nonstructured/play time daycare soon! He’s been soaking up all the love and snuggles he can get and loves going on his walks. It’s been great to see him get more comfortable and settle in his home.

Photographers Note: There is nothing else to talk about here besides Finn’s ears. Yes, he was a very good boy, so happy and joyous playing with his stuffed frog (unfortunately all of those photos were a blur due to the exuberance of which he played); not to mention an excellent poser & checked in with me often for kisses and pats. But those ears, he really has the ability to look like two completely different dogs depending on which way the ears happen to be going. Pretty much every action shot I had two identical photos, with the exception of the ears, one they would be up the other down. He is the only volunteer where I chose two bowtie shots for the side by side comparison (see below). I mean seriously this adorable boy may have a future in doggie modeling with his ability to transform into different looks so easily! 😆

Kilo

5 words/phrases that best describe Stibb & Kilo?

Stibb:

  1. Demands attention 24/7

  2. Bossy

  3. Needy

  4. 50-pound lap dog/cuddle bug

  5. Cuddle Bug

Kilo:

  1. Happy

  2. Silly

  3. Quirky

  4. Clumsy

  5. Sensitive

What makes Stibb & Kilo unique? Stibb is completely obsessed with the ocean. She will run back and forth chasing the waves and swimming through them for hours and hours. When she gets to the beach there is no stopping her.. she runs directly to the water and doesn’t stop until she is picked up and carried away.

Kilo is literally the happiest dog that ever lived. He always has a huge smile on his face. His tail wags non-stop. Kilo’s energy is contagious. Just by looking at him, you can feel happiness radiating out of him and you can’t help but absorb and put out that same energy when you’re around him. It is impossible to not laugh and smile when you are around Kilo.

Stibb;s may not be running towards the water, but running around just the same!

Happy Kilo coming at ya!

Rescue Stories: Stibb is a rescue from the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, Stibb’s previous owners had her chained outside of their house as a “guard dog”. She lived day in, and day out chained to a tree. At some point, her chain ended up getting wrapped around her back leg. It must have been stuck around her leg for days because she ended up trying to chew her foot off to get out of it. Her owners took her to the vet and when the vet told them she needed to have her leg amputated, they decided they didn’t want her anymore. The vet ended up doing the surgery for free and once she recovered, brought her to the Humane Society where I was a volunteer. I happened to be volunteering the day she came in and I fell head over heels in love with her. I was not able to have pets at the apartment I lived in at the time, or else I would have taken her home that day. She stayed in the shelter for four months, deteriorating and really lost her spirit. She developed a skin fungus, refused to walk, and lost a ton of weight. I couldn’t bare to see her in that state any longer so I decided to break my lease and move so that I could adopt her. The rest is history!

Sweet Stibb settling in.

Kilo is also a rescue from the Virgin Islands. He and his litter mates were dropped off at the Humane Society, covered in fleas and emaciated. One day when I was at the shelter volunteering, I saw him cowered in the corner of a cage. He was petrified and flinched when I tried to pet him. When I went back next day, he was still hunched in a ball in the corner of the cage but he seemed to remember me and did the tiniest little wag of his tail. The shelter staff was worried about him and didn’t know how to bring him out of his shell. I decided to bring my dog Stibb for a play date to see if I could help. As soon as they saw each other, Kilo let his guard down and became the happy, hyper, wild thing that he is today. They were automatic best friends. I brought Kilo home right then and there, and from that day on, they have never left each other’s sides.

Puppy Kilo ready to start his new life!

What is your favorite pastime as a family? Watching Stibb play and swim at the beach is the most amazing thing. Even with three legs, there is nothing that can stop her when she is in her element. Her face is full of pure happiness, without a worry in the world. It has made me realize that losing a leg was truly a blessing in disguise. If she had never had to get her leg amputated, she would have lived her entire life chained to a tree never knowing the simple things, like running through the sand and waves, and the pure joy that she (and all dogs) deserves to experience.

One of Kilo’s favorite things is going for car rides. He has to be in the passenger’s side, and he demands that I pet his head the entire time. If I take my hand off of him, even for a second, he nudges me to get it back on there. He gets super relaxed, his eyes start to close, and you can tell he is so peaceful and happy.

What is life like since you rescued Stibb & Kilo? Life with Stibb never has a dull moment. She is always making me laugh and smile. She is a constant reminder that no matter what obstacles you face in life, you can overcome them and thrive.

Life with Kilo brings me so much happiness. His energy and aura are so powerful. Just being in his presence lifts my mood and looking at him puts a smile on my face. He is such a big goofball and he makes me laugh out loud at least a once a day.

Photographers Note: These two are just so cute together. You see the bond that was immediately formed when they met. They are the picture of living in the now and resilience. They don’t let their past dictate where they are today. I think the fact that these two were rescued from the Virgin Islands while Chelsea happen to be living there kind of makes you think these three were meant to be together. When you hear the details of their stories, even more so. Their big pittie smiles pretty much tell the story of their happy ever after!

Pibble Sibs!
